Assemblyman Schroeder Charged With Writing $400k In Bad Checks

State Assemblyman Robert Schroeder wrote almost $400,000 in bad checks, according to the state attorney general.

New Jersey State Assemblyman Robert Schroeder was charged Friday with writing almost $400,000 worth of bogus checks, according to a press release from the state attorney general's office.

Schroeder allegedly wrote the checks to people who invested in his Hillsdale-based company, All Points International Distributors. The company manufactures pre-fabricated structures. Most of the company's business has been with the federal government, according to the press release.

Schroeder said he wrote two checks totalling about $100,000 because he believed the U.S. Army had wired him money owed for a contract, according to a report on NorthJersey.com. Schroeder apologized and said the debt had been paid, according to the report.

Officials from the attorney general's office said they believed Schroeder had "intentionally" written bad checks. State officials seized seven bank accounts maintained by Schroeder under API and other businesses, including Hercules Global Logistics, LLC and RS Consultants, LLC.

“Deliberately writing checks when you know that you don’t have the funds to back them is a crime, and when it involves the kind of money alleged here, it’s a very serious crime,” Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said in the press release.

Chiesa said the investigation is still ongoing and other investors may have also been duped. Detectives searched Schroeder's Washington Township home and API headquarters in Hillsdale Friday morning.

Schroeder was charged with second-degree passing bad checks at a State Police Sub Station in Totowa. Officials said he was expected to be released without bail. Schroeder faces as much as 10 years in state prison and $150,000 in criminal fines, according to the attorney general's office.

Schroeder, 52, is a Republican who represents New Jersey's 39th District in the State Assembly. He began his first term in 2010 and started a second term in this year. He previously served on the Washington Township Council.

Schroeder did not immediately return calls for comment Friday.

Patch will have more information on this story as it becomes available.

From Schro's web site: "I am committed to the core values of fiscal responsibility and free enterprise..." In Bob Schroeder's Republicanland, fiscal responsibility is only where poor people are concerned, and free enterprise means you can scam anyone you can get away with.

What do you think would happen if you or I was charged with the same crime? Do you think you would be released without bail? I seriously doubt it. Equal Justice for all. Riiiiight.

how much did our former Gov. and financial genius (according to VP Biden and Pres. Obama) Jon "MF" Corzine steal from customers funds (including pension funds) at MF Global? Last time I looked it was $1,600,000,000. Is Jonny boy in jail? Probably at some 1%er resort. Wait, he is raising funds for President Obama.

Why isn't the AG Eric Holder investigating? Maybe because he is friends with Obama, Biden, Holder and other prominent Dems?

To think that only one political partyhas blemishes is ridiculous! Our government is broken. All politicians have one set of rules for them and a different set of rules for the REAL working man.We need to limit the amount of time ALL politicians serve and also make them serve for minimum wage! Welcome to the real world.

So this republican Stare Assemblyman is also conducting private business with the Federal Government? Seems that the government cannot afford to continue to support programs such as the food stamp program, medicare/ medicaid programs, social security, nor can government continue it's payments to the unemployed, but it can afford to conduct business to the tune of thousands of taxpayer dollars with this NJ State Assemblyman. Then he shamelessly accepts the taxpayer money AND writes bad cheques on top the bargain. Typical "law abiding " republican.

According to today's Record, Schroeder is blaming President Obama, saying the bad economy made him do it. I guess all the other households and business people in the Township who have been struggling and DIDN'T kite checks don't count. He's also blaming defense spending cuts. I guess he thinks we should keep throwing American kids into a meat grinder just to feed his big house in town and that supersedes even the Republican mantra of cutting spending. He's been sued over and over again for a decade. This is no isolated incident.

Which one of us hasn't made mistakes in our lives. Why is everybody throwing stones, people in glass houses should not throw stones. Missing a deadline is a mistake. Bouncing a single check is a mistake. Not seeing that someone is barreling out of a side street and hitting him is a mistake. Forgetting to pay the gas bill is a mistake. This, apparently was multiple bad checks drawn on multiple accounts. That is a pattern, not a mistake. Schroeder isn't even denying the charges. Just because you may appreciate work he has done in the community does not give him a free pass. This man sells himself as a fiscal responsibility Republican but bounces checks and then blames others. That's called hypocrisy and not taking responsibility for his actions. His "good works", even if done for political gain, may, and probably should, serve him well if he is convicted...but they do not entitle him to a free pass.

Sure has has done good for the Community but maybe that was a cover for what was going on? He would not be the first to live such a life. Again, the victims here are the rest of his family. He is a smart man and got carried away with himself. He spent way too much money on a misguided run for Govenor which just further depleted his money most likely at the same time as changes in the war which limited his funds. He cannot blame that on anyone but himself. To blame it on the current admininstration is ridiculous, first rule of finance, don't spend more than you are taking in or can comfortably expect to take in. He was in way over his head and had several companies so he could play the shell game and unfortunately it caught up to him. Reality check time, he is human and needs to learn that himself. He is and will always be a nice man but his head/ego got too large for him.

An article in the ny times makes it look like it wasn't the economy but his own fault .
"The federal Government Accountability Office found the company’s past performance to be unacceptable and cited that as reason to pass it over for a contract last year to provide tents for an Army unit in Afghanistan, even though Mr. Schroeder’s business had submitted a lower bid than competitors.

In December 2011, the accounting office denied All Points International’s appeal of that designation. All Points contended that the determination was based on one bad incident even though the company had successfully fulfilled other contracts for the government."

If Mr. Schroeder's businesses have had problems for a while, it's understandable that the government would shy away if they had doubts his companies could deliver. I'm more concerned with his claim that his financial woes are Obama's fault because of the wind-down of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as if the Federal government has an obligation to keep feeding kids into a meatgrinder so that Schroeder can keep his nice house on Schlegel Lake. It sounds like he didn't put away anything for a rainy day while times were flush, instead deciding to buy political influence with the local and state Republican Parties. That $400,000 in donations he's made over the years would have gone a long way to ensure that he wasn't put in a position of writing bad checks.

And by the way, before you all start squawking about Obama intervening personally to deny the great and powerful and wonderful Bob Schroeder a contract, please note that the GAO reports to CONGRESS, not the executive branch. The current Comptroller General wasn't finally appointed until 2010, but he had served in his capacity as acting CG since March 2008, when he was named on an interim basis by George W. Bush.

Sounds like Maureen knows something about his property taxes and myabe we will find out in time. I have heard he has many little investors locally that are out money as well. Seems he was good at getting people to "loan" him money. This is a sad state of affairs and yes we will all have to wait for the truth to come out in the fiscal investigation that has just begun. Who knows how mortgaged up his properties are and who else is going to fall with him from his business. Either way an Ethics Lesson is in the works for at least the short term. I do wonder why all the Republicans aren't calling for him to resign or maybe they are behind the scenes. The Dems have nothing to applaud about they have such fine examples of late like Joe Ferriero & Ken Zisa. so no one should be gloating at this man's bad moves. I do however again worry about the rest of his extended family.

EXACTLY, sruffy. It is a sad state of affairs. No one party at the local level has a patent on corruption and bad judgment. Here in Bergen County, both party apparatuses are rotten to the core with cronyism, glad-handing, influence-buying, and other behaviors that may not always be illegal, but are rarely in the interest of the citizens. I haven't heard a peep out of any local Democrats, which is probably wise. Though if I were a betting man, I'd guess that Mr. Goetz is smelling blood in the water and has his eye on "inheriting" Schroeder's seat if the latter resigns.

LOL, I bet mr. Goetz or his running mate Durso would love to elevate to the Assembly level. However.....you have to have enough votes at the County level to get that nod and neither one does since they are both relative newcombers and problems at that. If they had a good record of accomplishments then it would be a better chance. Either way Schroeder has to resign first and that has not happened so it is putting the horse before the cart as they say. Bigger issue is who will run in the November election on both sides if the opening happens. Get your score cards out now and start marking them it is going to get ugly in the Valley!

Given the performance of our mayor and council the past couple of years, it is laughable that any of them would think they merit consideration to run should Schroeder resign. Hopefully some honest, ethical, competent, mature, Republicans step up to the plate to challenge our mayor and council and run for the assembly seat should it be vacant. Our present mayor and council may be honest ,decent people, but they have demonstrated an inability to govern effectively and with sound judgment. As to Schroeder, he is innocent until proven guilty. Even if he were acquitted, this sad episode raises enough questions about his judgment that he should resign immediately for the sake of the community and his family. He does himself no good by trying to hold onto office and would only lose the next election. Now, I don't think I'm alone in hoping we get new candidates not beholden to the county republican organization lest we get more of the same, otherwise we are just asking for the Democrats to sneak into what's been relatively safe R territory

Schroeder will have to answer these charges in court.

What about Jon Corzine who has been labeled a financial genius by Obama and helped the President design hos economic recovery plan that so far has lead to the longest period of time the unemployment rate is above 8%? Did I mention that Corzine is a fund bundler for the president?

All jon Corzine did was gamble away billions at mf global. He fired the risk manager that warned him about the strategy.

So when Jonny's bet went bad and needed collateral did Jonny reach into his own pockets? No. Of course not. He did what could hard left liberals do; he took other peoples money in this case hard working folks's retirement funds to the tune of 1.6billion.

So is Jonny in jail? Fortunately Jonny is friends with pres. Barry and is still raising millions for the pres. When u are donating to the President you don't have a care in the world.

So where is the outrage? Bob Schroeder will face charges over 400,000 while Jonny Corzine steals billions and lives the good life.
