Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Car at Lemoine and Whiteman

A Fort Lee woman died Sunday after being struck by a car; police say the driver is not being charged.

A Fort Lee woman died Sunday from injuries suffered after getting hit by a car while crossing Lemoine Avenue at Whiteman Street, police said.

Helen Norton, 63, of Fort Lee, was struck by a 2010 Mercedes Benz driven by 66-year-old Joseph A. Dellaquila of Englewood Cliffs at about 6:15 p.m. Sunday, according to Fort Lee police.

Dellaquila was traveling north on Lemoine Avenue in the left lane when he struck Norton.

Police said Norton was “gravely injured” in the collision, and that the Cliffside Park Ambulance Corps transported her to Hackensack Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 8:54 p.m.

An investigation into the accident by members of the Fort Lee Police Accident Investigation Unit continues, but no charges are currently pending against Dellaquila, police said.

“She was wearing dark clothing,” said Capt. Roy Bortolus of the Fort Lee Police Department, explaining that Dellaquila was not charged because the victim “may have been crossing against the light.”
