Hellenic Civic Club Celebrates Greek Independence Day

The Hellenic Civic Club hosts annual Greek Independence Day Celebration Saturday to celebrate independence from the Ottoman Empire.

The Hellenic Civic Club is hosting its annual Greek Independence Day Celebration Saturday to celebrate 192 years of Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire. Greece gained its independence March 25, 1821, after nearly 400-years of Ottoman occupation. The event includes traditional Greek food and desserts and as well dancing from youth groups from near-by Greek Orthodox Churches.

The Hellenic Civic Club was established in Fort Lee approximately 40-years ago. It was formed to promote the Greek language, heritage and culture. The Club was instrumental in bringing the Greek language to the Fort Lee High School as a foreign language elective.

The Greek Indepence Day Celebration is taking place Sat. March 23 and begins at 2 p.m. at the Fort Lee Recreation Center located at the bottom of Stillwell Avenue. Admission to the event is free and there will be raffles.
