Gesher Shalom to Celebrate Back to School, Inaugurate High Holidays
Two events at the local Synagogue on Anderson Avenue in Fort Lee, including a barbecue, music and religious services, are planned for Sept. 7 and 8.
Fort Lee’s Congregation Gesher Shalom, the Jewish Community Center of Fort Lee, is holding two separate events in early September celebrating students returning to school and inaugurating its High Holidays programs and services, respectively, the local Synagogue announced this week.
It’s also inviting non-members to consider joining.
On Friday, Sept. 7, Gesher Shalom will hold a “Back to School and Shul Barbecue” starting at 6 p.m.
Following the rain-or-shine barbecue will be a “Shabbat Together Musical Service” with Cantor Paul Zim; the service takes place in the Gesher Shalom sanctuary starting at 7 p.m.
The barbecue, for which reservations are required, costs $12 for members and $14 for non-members, but there is no charge for children under five years old.
You can make reservations for the barbecue by calling 201-947-1735; the reservation deadline is Sept. 3.
“Barbecue participants are invited to bring blankets and picnic on the lawn of the synagogue or they can dine indoors,” said a spokesperson announcing the event. “Everyone is welcome to attend the service.”
The following day, Saturday, Sept. 8, Gesher Shalom will inaugurate its High Holidays programs and services with Selichot led by Rabbi Kenneth Stern, along with Zim, at 8:30 p.m.
Gesher Shalom invites members and non-members alike to join and urges non-members “to explore new opportunities for membership and High Holiday seat reservations.”
Membership dues, for example, are waived for families during the years their oldest child is registered in the Hebrew School’s pre-K through second grades, according to Gesher Shalom.
