Fort Lee freshman volleyball coach James Puliatte said Wednesday that because Lakeland is currently getting snow, the volleyball game and relief efforts planned for Wednesday have been pushed back a day.
"The weather Gods have spoken," Puliatte said, adding that "all the original activities/relief efforts are still a go."
Editor’s Note: Puliatte submitted the following to Patch for publication. Be sure to read the “Cliff Notes” at the end; Puliatte admits he tends to write long messages:
Tomorrow (Wednesday), the Girl's Varsity Volleyball Team will be playing their first home state playoff game in almost 20 years. The match is 5pm at FLHS, and we are holding a pre-match rally for students/fans starting at 3:45. (If the game gets postponed until Thursday everything below will take place on Thursday)
Originally this was just going to be a rally for the students for the game but we now would like to use this opportunity to collect donations to help with the Hurricane Sandy relief effort.
Donations collected tomorrow will be going to various places that have been hit hard, to try and "spread the wealth" so to speak. Specifically, certain items will be going to Senior Citizens in Fort Lee who need warm clothing, etc, associations such as the Red Cross, and to make sure the "wealth is spread."
I will personally be delivering items to some of the hardest hit areas listed here: http://goo.gl/DXwTh
The"Pre-Match Fan Rally* will run from 3:45-4:30 or so in the WEST GYM (small gym), you can drop your donations off during that time. We will have volunteers collecting.
If you do not intend on attending the game but still wish to donate I will be in the West Gym beginning 8th period setting up.
**NO MONETARY DONATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED EVEN IF IT'S A CHECK....IF YOU ONLY HAVE CASH WALK OVER TO THE A&P FIRST AND BUY A CAN OF SOUP :-) **
Items we are looking to collect:
-school age children’s clothes (could have lost all their clothes when lost homes and now have to go back to school)
-winter coats (all ages)
-non perishable foods
-small first aid kits
-plastic bags ALL SIZES
-jarred baby food an all kinds of baby items
-Cat food and kitty litter
**Basically anything that is non perishable.**
We could also use any type of donations for the actual "student" rally like cookies, chips, drinks, plates, napkins, cups, etc. or any type "bins"/boxes you have lying around that you are not using so we can use them to collect the donations. Just bring them to the West Gym during 9th period. Thanks
Thank you for any help. The match starts at 5 so if you plan on attending which I hope you do, please bring in your donations to the West Gym between 3:15-4:30. I will be in the West Gym preparing for our "Rally" starting during 9th period and will be fully set up by 3:30 but will be accepting donations through out the time I am setting up as well. Come to help the victims of Sandy and stay to support our Bridgeladies to victory!
This isn't just for teachers/staff/students either invite your friends/family it should be a great PLAYOFF game but no matter the score the sufferers of Sandy will be the true winners.
I am sure many of you have already donated your services or plan to in other ways...so why not just come stay for the game? :-) It should be fun...we are giving out fan gear to the students to wear during the game and making it into a little "pre-match" rally something we plan to do more of in the winter to improve school spirit at the athletic level with the Fort Lee Fanatics again this year.
As an added incentive or to at least make you laugh I have attached the picture of myself that we have been using as "viral" marketing for the match :-)
(I made a bet with the team that if they win Wednesday I will wear one of the outfits in the picture on "Casual Friday" just in case you see me dressed funny Friday)
Be safe and see you all tomorrow! Thank you for everything! WE ARE BRIDGEMEN!
PS: If you would prefer to donate through the NJEA you can view their Hurricane Relief Fund Information Here which includes where to send monetary donations: http://goo.gl/0sr1A
