Fort Lee Taekwondo Stars Qualify for World Championships

Four of the nation's best taekwondo practitioners are headed off to Spain this October.

Four students at renowned Fort Lee Team USA Taekwondo Fitness have qualified for the 2013 USA ITF World Championship in Spain this October.

According to Fort Lee Team USA Taekwondo Fitness, Fort Lee HS sophomore Marc-Dimitri Akda won the USA national qualifier in the lightweight division. He will represent the country in Bendorm, Spain in October. You might remember he won bronze in New Zealand at the ITF World Championship at age 13.

Merissa Pico, a second alternate for the 2012 Olympics and Fort Lee native, is another qualifier. Currently a student at Boston University, Pico was ranked third in the world at age 13 and made the United States Junior National team in 2008.

In a unique situation, father and son duo Michael and George Kayumov are also Spain-bound.

The Olympic pedigree is strong at Fort Lee Team USA Taekwondo – Master Alvin Bernard was a coach for the 2012 Olympic team in London.
