Five Things Thursday (Through Saturday)

Movie screening and art at the library; dancing, music and another movie at the community center; plus a new exhibit at the museum

Here’s a quick look at five things we thought you should know about and might not want to miss as you plan the rest of your week:

Number one (Thursday, 2 p.m., Fort Lee Public Library)

If you’re in the mood for a movie Thursday (and a good laugh), check out the Fort Lee Public Library’s screening of the 1980 comedy classic, Airplane!

For those movie buffs and Leslie Nielson fans who are also art lovers, grab a bite to eat or a cup of coffee after Airplane! and head right on back to the library by 7 p.m. for artist Ken Vallario’s talk on “Art in the 21st Century.”

Vallario’s acrylic paintings are on display in the library’s Atrium Gallery through the end of the month. Thursday’s reception and talk take place in the gallery, which is also on the lower level. Refreshments will be served.

Number three (Friday, 7:30 p.m., Fort Lee Community Center)

The ’s "Dancing Under the Stars" series continues Friday at 7:30 p.m. with “Swing Night.”

The free sessions at the community center are held rain or shine on the second and fourth Fridays of the month through Aug. 26. Each evening includes dance demonstrations and lessons, followed by open dance time with a DJ.

Number four (Saturday, 7 p.m., Fort Community Center)

Also at the community center, Fort Lee's annual Movies and Music Under the Stars continues Saturday when the music will be provided by Ring of Fire, a Johnny Cash tribute band, and the movie will be the critically acclaimed True Grit (2010), starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld and directed by the Coen brothers (Joel and Ethan).

The weekly event takes place Saturday evenings through Labor Day weekend.

Music is from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and the movies start at sunset. Bring a blanket or lawn chair because seating is limited. Programs will take place indoors in the event of rain.

Number five (Ongoing through January, Fort Lee Museum)

And finally, the Fort Lee Historical Society Presents the Palisades Amusement Park exhibit, "Our Last Summer in the Sun - 40th Anniversary of the Closing of Our Park," which opened recently and runs through January, 2012.

Rare artifacts and photos from the Fort Lee Historical Society's archive and screenings of Palisades Amusement Park: A Century of Fond Memories, a documentary by historian Vince Gargiulo, highlight this exhibit.

The exhibit is on view at the at 1588 Palisade Avenue. The museum’s hours are weekends from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. and weekdays by appointment for groups.
