Ferry Service Launches Mobile App to Track Buses, Buy Tickets

NY Waterway officials say the company is the first mass transit company in the country to offer such a service.

NY Waterway has installed GPS technology on town buses that take passengers from Fort Lee, Cliffside Park and Edgewater to the Edgewater ferry landing, enabling residents to track buses via the web or a new mobile app, the company recently announced.

“By logging on to the NY Waterway website, residents [in the three boroughs] will be able to track locations of the buses rather than waiting at bus stops,” a company spokesperson said in a statement.

One of the routes starts in Fort Lee (see map for details).

The installation of the GPS system comes on the heels of the launch of NY Waterway’s new mobile app, which also incorporates payment and ticketing.

The company says it is the first mass transit service in the U.S. to offer “a 100 percent smart device-based app” that does all this.

The free app launched in January and is available to download from NY Waterway’s website, the Android Marketplace and the iTunes App Store. It works on all Android and Apple iOS smart phones and the iPad, according to NY Waterway.

“One of the key features of the app, besides the ability to purchase tickets, includes the GPS bus locator to track status of connecting buses,” the company said.
