Elderly Woman in Critical Condition After SUV Backs into Her

The collision Monday morning was the second serious accident involving pedestrians in two days.

An elderly Fort Lee woman was injured Monday when she was hit by an SUV backing out of a driveway on Edwin Avenue in Fort Lee, police said.

Mary A. Hickey, 86, of Fort Lee, was walking north on Edwin at about 9:11 a.m. Monday, when she was struck by a 2010 Nissan Rogue driven by 29-year-old Arbnore Tafila, who was backing out of her own driveway, according to Fort Lee police.

“Mrs. Hickey was injured in the collision and transported to Hackensack University Medical Center Emergency Room,” according to a statement released by the Fort Lee Police Department.

Police said Tuesday morning that Hickey is listed in critical condition, but that the extent of her injuries was unknown.

An accident investigation by the Fort Lee Police Department Accident Investigation Unit is ongoing, but police said Tafila was not charged.

The incident came just one day after a fatal accident involving a pedestrian at Lemoine Avenue and Whiteman Street.

Obviously, the moron who backed out of her driveway was totally in the wrong. Had she looked when pulling out, she would have seen the pedestrian. I live on a main rload and I constantly have to look when pulling out of my driveway for pedestrians as well as oncoming traffic both ways. It seems that people today are basically stupid and always in a hurry that they do not take the time to do the right thing. Twice last week, I had idiots who just pulled out of their parking spots at CVS and the supermarket without looking. Even when I honked, instead of stopping, they proceeded to exit. We should raise "so called stupid fines" to $1000.00 and then maybe people will think twice!

hey Bill reminder: pedestrians have the right of way no matter how old they are. Plus AML is right , people are into to much of a rush in life to look, they just go. I catch myself doing it. and if the person was behind the car, the driver wasn't paying attention to what they were doing.

The fact is we live in a town full of senior citizens that need to be protected. At the same time, we must make pedestrians as accountable as those behind the wheel for their irresponsibility.
