Commuters Could Face Major GWB Delays
NJ Transit will cross-honor tickets as agency warns of bus slowdowns.
NJ Transit will cross-honor some bus tickets in response to a potential traffic nightmare caused by construction in New York City, the agency said.
A three-month repair project at the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, which spans the Harlem River and connects Manhattan to the Bronx on Route 95, has forced lane closures and could lead to back-ups through Hackensack Monday, officials have warned. Highways feeding the George Washington Bridge could also see massive delays.
In Fort Lee, police were prepared to block local roads from spill-over traffic, northjersey.com reported Sunday. Leonia’s mayor had also floated a plan to block non-local traffic from exiting off Route 80.
Teaneck and Hackensack officials had no immediate plans to shut down local roadways.
The lane closures began over the weekend, with minimal traffic delays. Some minor delays were reported because of a Yankee game and minor accident.
Officials have encouraged commuters to use mass-transit. NJ Transit announced the following lines could experience slowdowns:
The impacted bus routes include:
- 171 Paterson – New York
- 175 Ridgewood – New York
- 178 Hackensack – New York
- 181 Union City – New York
- 182 Hackensack – New York
- 186 Dumont – New York
- 188 North Bergen – New York
Local bus routes operating in Fort Lee could also be impacted:
- No. 153 Fairview – Fort Lee – New York Express
- No. 154 Fort Lee – Palisades Park – New York
- No. 156 & 156R Englewood Cliffs – New York
- No. 158 Fort Lee – Edgewater – New York
- No. 159 & 159R Fort Lee – New York
- No. 755 Edgewater - Fort Lee – Paramus
- No. 756 Englewood Cliffs – Fort Lee - Paramus
Bus tickets on these routes will be cross-honored on NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, Midtown Direct, Main/Bergen and Pascack Valley Lines (except for travel to/from Metro-North stations), the agency said.

Keith... It was a beautiful ride today but there are forces working against the good fortune. As much as they were pitching this all last week in the media, this morning they made note on every radio station traffic report I heard(3 different stations)that the GW was great and the traffic wasn't really affected. This means most likely people heeded the warning and now will flock back tomorrow because of how the news over emphasized it. I'd bet the rest of the week will be busy.

I've gotten the warning emails from NJTransit. Glad to hear traffic wasn't terrible today. Hopefully things don't take a turn for the worse!

You didn't list the Red & Tan busses, such as 11C that also crosses the bridge.

NJ Transit didn't provide any information about those lines, but I'll follow up with them tomorrow. Thanks for pointing it out.

There's a Ft. Lee cop car in the parking lot of the Motel hoping for Traffic so they can pull people over that go into the shoulder. It would be totally crazy to think that the renewed calls for caution and traffic are an attempt to raise revenue, right?

Keith, the cops here do anything to make money, like pulling me over for not yielding to a person who steps on the road when I was 90% across the crosswalk and yielding would have caused the cop behind me to rear end me.

I still think everyone was scared away by the media and they are all going to come back next week making a big mess.
